The water vaporized by the oceanic impacts condenses back into rains, causing massive flooding and destroying pretty much any dam still standing after the earthquakes, thus drowning many people too far from the coasts to be killed by the tidal waves.

Antagonistic Governor: Lieutenant Governor Montross becomes Acting Governor of California following his boss' death in the chaos following Hammerfall, and while he never appears in person his one known action of note is joining the New Brotherhood Army and ceding all legal authority in the state to them. Tim's assistant Marty Robinson gleefully steals Tim's home and forces him back onto the road at gunpoint (while sinisterly offering to let his female companion stay) and gets away scot-free. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known. It is not exactly a spoiler to say that the comet does, in fact, strike the Earth — in fact, it fragments into pieces which land in massive strikes all over the globe. It helps make for very interesting reading, and I think I’ve added several new books on my to-read list. It's the future, scaled down to the bare minimum after trawling the dirt and praying to make it through one winter. It felt a little disjointed early on, not knowing why certain characters were being introduced and I did feel that possibly a little too much time was spent on the giving some of the less important characters backstory that didn't really seem to matter that much.

His daughter Maureen Jellison has inherited a passion for the sciences from her father but struggles to forge an identity of her own. So there was a little bit of awareness there, and yeah, it was written in 1977, but still, one gets the distinct impression that when the Senator's aide reflects smugly to himself that one of the few good things about Hammerfall was that it put an end to "Women's lib," he's kind of speaking for the authors. It's not that it's unbelievable that groups would resort to cannibalism (that actually seems somewhat plausible), its that the only large group of non-white characters are the cannibals. For the most part, the people who survive the end of the world do so by being selfish, murdering, thieving bastards. Heroic Sacrifice: The manner in which Air Force General John Baker saves the nuclear power plant from the cannibal army.It all feels very familiar and contains, with few exceptions, very little that strays off the well worn path of post apocalyptic fiction.

Opposing our Brave Heroes is a diverse rampaging army made up of (I kid you not): Trade Unionists (damn commies! There should be a name for the particular type of book that is exemplified by some popular novels published between the late 1950s and the early 1980s. This is the story Niven and Pournelle tell, with a level of realism that echoes people’s attitudes and actions witnessed during the COVID pandemic. He has also written for the DC Comics character Green Lantern including in his stories hard science fiction concepts such as universal entropy and the redshift effect, which are unusual in comic books. The next stop in my end-of-the-world reading marathon was Lucifier's Hammer, the 1977 disaster epic by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.
