About this deal

An incredible read of adventure and life that will draw you in and inspire you to pursue your own journeys. Throughout, Katie Carr has imbued Toby’s account with a natural charm, which combined with sublimely evocative descriptions, effortlessly transports the reader deep into the maritime environment. It’s a book I will keep on my bookshelf and remember and refer to when visiting some of the places in the future.

At the beginning, in chapters Toby managed to complete before his death, he describes his upbringing, family life and reasons for taking on the challenge. Written by Toby's sister Katie from his extensive notes and recordings after his untimely death, Moderate Becoming Good Later is both an epic adventure - sometimes choppy, constantly moving - and a personal voyage of discovery that includes old friends and new, plenty of wildlife, and the ever-present sea. But I got tired of being thrown from one place to the other, sometimes multiple ones in one paragraph (especially in the last chapters) like all he was doing was kayaking as fast as he could and not stopping to admire where he was which I know wasn't true. It’s exciting to read of bravery and fortitude but for it to be told with such humility and optimism, is truly inspiring. Obviously, I understand how hard it must have been to finish writing a book someone else started when Katie didn't even experience what her brother lived through but at the very least, maybe it would've been worth it for her to go to the places he went and try and picture what he felt by being there, instead of looking at photos on Google. This is an amazing book, so well crafted by Katie from his notes, audio recordings, blogs and messages and it was a pleasure to have had a chance to have read it and join Toby on this adventure. From the wildness and the peace of the sea, looking back at the land, Toby hoped to gain the strength and balance he knew nature could provide and to discover the things that anchor us to each other.

A compelling tale of adventure, coming to terms with life's end, and profound grief, finished magnificently after his death by sister Katie Carr. Toby's outrageously fearless spirit and good humour will not fail to uplift and spur you on to pursue your own adventures.

Use this tool to build your own journey or choose from an exciting range of specially selected tours. What an amazing adventurer Toby Carr was and what an incredible achievement that his sister Katie has done by putting together his notes to create this book.

On her year-long journey through loss, frustration, creation and storytelling, Katie was able to put into practice her training in expressive arts therapy and talked the talk on storytelling, as she had so often encouraged her graduate students to do. Toby was lucky enough to see incredible places and even though you can *feel* what it was like to be on the kayak, it also feels like you're kayaking in a void. They chapters about the kayaking were interesting, particularly in terms of the people he met along the way, but for me, the most interesting chapters were at the beginning and end.He had a contagious wonder for the world, spotting a dolphin and taking a moment to appreciate it existing with him in that moment. The book starts off sharing family history, explaining health conditions and why he wanted to do this, a rather clever method was done to share this. This a great book for anyone who loves the outdoors, the sea and adventure whether in life or from the arm chair as well as a story of personal challenge and heartbreak. I read this wonderful book often with a lump in my throat, many tears in my eyes and a racing pulse, because of the pure adventure of his inspirational physical and emotional endeavours.
