About this deal

Another thing I love about ALL Emma's books is the resolutions, she is a master at the realistic, unflowery but whooosh feel-good happy ending: The happy endings come naturally from all the previous confusion and despair, and it gives you such an uplift - even empowering feeling. Maybe this way is the hard way, but at least the air will be cleared and your connection with your loved ones will be stronger afterwards. She does not care for her stepmother, whom her father married after her mother died in a car accident. The fallout hasn’t been pretty and even though it felt righteous in the moment, I’ve been thinking I went too far.

Whilst her early novels are humorous, her recent work focuses on emotional themes and these novels are both heart-breaking and life affirming. I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. Robinson masterfully unpeels the story layer by layer, slowly revealing secrets and complexities that are true to real life. The faultless writing allows you to fully immerse yourself in the story, and this emotional family drama, packed with secrets, lies and gripping backstory, was a brilliant one to get lost in. Whether she does or not I will leave you ti find out yourself along with what Liam did and what secret Jill is hiding. In January 2020, my dad brought home his new girlfriend to meet us and she moved in with us when our state went into lockdown in March.

The main mystery in My Stepmother’s Secret is why did Gabbie and her two daughter’s up and leave her husband to come stay with her Stepmother? When I pick a book by this author I know, even before I have opened it, that I am in for a fabulous heartwarming as well as heartbreaking story.

I absolutely loved this book, no surprise there really as all Emma's books have all been amazing, and I just could not put it down! Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for an advanced reader's copy of this book for my honest review. Flipping between the lives of past and present Gabbie as she tries to do the right thing by her children, only to find out everything in her life is a lie. The supporting characters are equally well-developed and add depth to the story, making it more relatable.

As a parent myself I felt emotions such as horror, panic, love, dread, worry, stress, annoyance, guilt and so much more! Alternating in time between past and present, the novel shows us Gabbie in boarding school and then with her daughters and Jill as they navigate the new lives and the secrets withheld that eventually bind them together! Reading about how you’ve dealt with losing your parents made me feel kind of more steady, so thank you. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. Her stepmother, Jill, is initially portrayed as mean, but as her intentions are revealed, the readers see things from her perspective and understand her actions. As secrets from her past are revealed, Gabbie realizes the detrimental effects of keeping secrets and how she was repeating the same mistake with her own children. Something has happened in Gabbie’s marriage, but whatever it was, she is determined to keep it a secret, especially from her two daughters. In every book she has written she has managed to completely pull me in and make me feel all the emotions and this book is no different.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture publishing, and author Emma Robinson for the opportunity to read. It is a complete rollercoaster ride of emotions and Emma has weaved so many "hard" subjects perfectly into a gorgeous yet heart-breaking storyline. The author is good at writing emotional family dramas, and I have enjoyed what I have read by her so far.Unfortunately for Brianna, her bad reputation quickly catches up to her when she witnesses her new stepmom, Susanna (Jillian Murray), murder a man in a vacant parking lot.
